Jesus said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you say at once, ‘A shower is coming’; and so it happens. And when the wind blows from the south, you say, ‘It will be hot’; and so it is. You superficial people! You understand the signs of the earth and the sky, but you don’t understand the present times. And why do you not judge for yourselves what is fit? When you go with your accuser before the court, try to settle the case on the way, lest he drag you before the judge, and the judge deliver you to the jailer, and the jailer throw you into prison. I tell you, you will not get out until you have paid the very last penny.”
Today we celebrate a great saint, Anthony Mary Claret. Well, all saints are great by virtue of their holiness. Claret is just one among the many who witnessed to the transforming power of the Gospel when taken to heart in one’s own life. But he can serve as a model on how we can be attentive to the signs of the times and act accordingly. He was not contented with doing the usual. He saw the great need of the church of his time and responded by his example of a holy life, his writings and sermons, his pastoral sensitivity as a bishop and finally his being a founder of a congregation whose sons would be (and are) at the forefront of combat between good and evil. Written by his own hands his life story can teach us a lot on how to be attentive to God’s signs and act accordingly. We are not groping in the dark because others have gone ahead of us and have faced these problems squarely. The saints of God are our friends and guides.
