Ebanghelyo: Marcos 1:29-39
Kinabukasan, maaga siyang bumangon at umalis.
Pagninilay
The first reading expresses the lament of a suffering person. Job observed that the human has to toil hard and has to undergo tribulations and afflictions as if without end. This poem is impressive in delivering to consciousness the hard side of existence: “Para siyang aliping hangad ang lilim, o ng manggagawang naiinip sa bayad. The Gospel narrative shows Jesus encountering an afflicted person. The Gospel according to Mark marks this as the first miracle of Jesus: healing the afflicted mother-in-law of Simon. And at the middle of the narrative, Jesus keeps healing the afflicted, the suffering, the slaved by evil spirits, etc. Toward the end of the narrative, Jesus moved from place to place to do the same, for precisely that was his mission: console the suffering, heal the afflicted, free the slaved, and through his teachings, uplift the downtrodden. Tribulations and afflictions seem to be our constant company along the journey. But we have a God who is always in search of the suffering; a God who offers us strength, who gives us light to see through, who loves us even when everything else fails. The second reading demonstrates to us how Paul follows the example of Jesus: “Sawi ako kung hindi ko ipangaral ang ebanghelyo!” Paul shows us that our mission as disciples is to do the same. We cannot just be beneficiaries of God’s benevolence. Concrete actions have to be done to make the Gospel operative in us and to others.
