The Diocese of Tandag mourns the death of His Excellency Most Rev. Ireneo Amantillo, CSsR, D.D, Bishop-Emeritus of Tandag. He was called Home by Our Father in Heaven at 8:25a.m. today, (Oct. 11) at Redemptorist House in Cebu City. He was 83 and had been suffering from prostate cancer.
Bishop Amantillo was born on December 10, 1934 in Alimodian, Iloilo and ordained as redemptorist priest on December 16, 1962. He was appointed as first bishop of the Diocese of Tandag on September 16, 1978 until he retired last October 18, 2001. True to his episcopal motto “Maayong Balita Alang Sa Mga Kabus”, he led in upholding the rights of the poor, the organization and education of the Indigenous People, and in protecting the integrity of the environment.
